FOUR PHASES TO THE BASIC STEAM CYCLE
GENERATION, EXPANSION, CONDENSATION AND FEED
GENERATION
coverts feed water into steam in the boiler. The boiler produces 600main and 600 auxiliary steam. Main steam goes to the main engine and the SSTG (Ships Service Turbine Generators.) 600 Auxiliary steam goes to your auxiliary equipment.
EXPANSION
converts thermal energy into mechanical energy by using the main engine and the SSTGs.
CONDENSATION
converts steam into liquid, which is called condensate by using the main condenser.
FEED
converts condensate into feed using the following equipment: air ejectors, first stage feed heater and then the DFT.
5 COMPONENTS OF A BASIC REFRIGERATION CYCLE
Compressor, Condenser, Receiver, Thermal Expansion Valve and Evaporators.
WHAT IS DFT
Deaerate Feed Tank.
The DFT has three purposes stores, preheats and deaerates feed water, and then it is transported to the boiler using the MFBP and the MFP. There are 2 DFT’s, NR1 DFT is located AFT MMR and NR2 DFT is located FWD MMR. |
EXPLAIN THE BOILERS
2 boilers on board. Nr 2 boiler located in fwd MMR and NR1 blr in aft MMR. The type of boiler we have onboard is a D-type 600 lb modified to 700lb.
600 MAIN AND AUXILLARY STEAM
600 main steams go to only two places, the main engine and the SSTG. 600 auxiliary steams go to several equipments such as (MFP) Main Feed Pump, (FFP) Fire Flushing Pumps, (MFBP) Main Feed Booster Pumps and (FDB) Forced Draft Blowers.
MAIN ENGINE
The Main Engine uses 600 main steams, it is classified as HP, LP turbine, double helical, double reduction, articulated.
EXPLAIN THE SHAFTS
There are 2 shafts Port shaft and Starboard shaft which are connected 2 main engines. The Port shaft has 8 bearings therefore the port shaft is the longer shaft and the Starboard shaft has 5 bearings so it’s the shorter shaft
MAIN CONDENSER
Located under the Main engine used to produce condensate. When steam hits the sea water tubes that passes through the condenser horizontally the steam turns into condensate and is stored in the hotwell
MAIN CIRCULATION PUMP
They are used to keep a constant flow of sea water into the Main Condenser. The Main Circ Pump is electrically operated and is started when the ship is going below 12knots and is stopped above 12knots.
LARGEST PUMP OPN BOARD |
WHAT IS SSTG
SHIPS SERVICE TURBINE GENERATOR,
SSTG provide electricity through out the ship. There are 5 SSTG onboard. 1&2 located in fwd MMR, 3 in AMR and 4&5 in aft MMR. The parameters of the SSTGs are 60herts, 450 volts, 2500kw and 4000amps. The SSTG uses 600 main steam and it is the primary source of power for the ship. |
WHAT IS EDG
EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR
SECONDARY SOURCE OF POWER, WE HAVE 2 NR1 2 IN FWD DIESEL AND NR2 IN AFT DIESEL |
STRUT BEARING
There is one strut bearing per shaft. The strut bearings are located outside the ship’s hull prior to the propellers.
WATCHSTANDERS FOR ENGINEERING
THERE ARE 11, The EOOW, Space sup, BCO, EPCP, Throttle Man, MMUL, BTUL, MMLL, BTLL, Burner man and Messenger.
EOOW
highest qualified engineering watch on the ship. The EOOWs job is to monitor all the engineering equipment on the ship, also the EOOW is in charge of handling the engineering logs which is a legal document and can be kept on board the ship for 3 yrs. EOOW stands watch in fwd MMR.
SPACE SUP
in charge of all the watch standers in the machinery room. Space sup gives order to start, stop and shift equipment as necessary and also get orders by the EOOW.
BCO
BOILER CONSOLE OPERATOR,
Stand for Boiler Console Operator, this watch stander operates the boiler FDB, MFP and MFBP as well as controls the fuel and steam for the boiler |
THROTTLEMAN
Operates the shaft by controlling the amount of main steam that goes to the main engine. Communicates with the bridge. This watch stander controls the speed of the ship and
WHAT IS EVAP
CONVERTS SEA WATER TO FRESH WATER,
HEATS UP THE WATER THEN THEN ADDS CHEMICAL CALLED BROMINE 100,000 GALLANS PER DAY |
FFP
FIRE FLUSHING PUMP,
purpose is to provide the ship with fire main. There are 12 FFPs on board. 1,2,3,4 in fwd pump room, 5&6 in fwd MMR, 7&8 in aft MMR and 9,10,11&12 in aft pump room. |
MFP
MAIN FEED PUMP,
PUMPS FEED WATER TO THE BOILER |
FDB
FORCED DRAFT BLOWER,
GIVES COMBUSTION AIR TO THE BOILER TO LIGHT AND MAINTAIN FIRES 2 FWD AND 2 AFT MMR |
WHAT IS THE JACKING GEAR USED FOR
They are to evenly warm the shaft, evenly cool the shaft, PMS, stop and lock the shaft and to prevent bowing of the shaft.
what is hpp
HPP’s are used to open and close sea chest valves by hydraulic power to fill deballasting tanks with sea water
What are HPACS
HPAC’s are used to supply the ship with high pressure air.
WHAT ARE LPAC USED FOR
LPAC’s are used to supply the ship with low pressure air.
WHAT IS THE EOSS
ENGINEERING OPERATIONAL SEQUENCING SYSTEM, bible of the space meaning that it provides casualty controls for the equipment in the space such as immediate and controlling actions
WHO IS CHENG
LCDR YARBER
SHORE POWER
There are 3 shore power stations on the Essex. Port, Starboard and Aft. 2 stations are always connected that is Aft and which ever side the ship is moored. Aft shore power station is the primary station. There are 10 cables on each station so that means 20 cables are always connected when we hook up shore power.
