Crisis
A sudden event in one's life that disturbs homeostasis, during which usual coping mechanisms cannot resolve the problem
Characteristics of a Crisis
1. occur in all individuals at one time or another
2. precipitated by specific identifiable events
3. personal by nature (crisis by me may not be crisis for you)
4. are acute
5. contains the potential for psychological growth OR deterioration
In Chinese....crisis is identified by the symbol for danger and opportunity
Better off to use it as an opportunity for growth :)
If not you become maladaptive
Phases in the Development of a Crisis (4)
Phase 1 - exposed to a stressor and anxiety increases
Phase 2 - coping techniques are not working and anxiety increases
Phase 3 - new coping techniques are tried (if they work you may return to lower level)
Phase 4 - burden increases to a breaking point and drastic results occur
Types of Crisis (6)
class 1 - Dispositional Crises = acute response to an external situational stressor [husband gets angry and hits you b/c he is frustrated with work]
class 2 - Crises of Anticipated Life Transitions = normal life transitions
class 3 - Crises Resulting from Traumatic Stress = crisis from unexpected external stressors one has little or no control
class 4 - Maturational / Developmental crisis = Crisis that occurs in response to situations that trigger an emotion related to an unresolved conflict you internalized

Crisis Intervention
Resolve immediate crisis and restore to pre-crisis level of functioning
Aggression can be at 4 levels
*mild (sarcasm)
*moderate (slamming doors)
*severe (threats of physical violence)
*extreme (physical act against others)
Aggression
almost always goal directed and has aim to a specific person or object (intent)

Escalating behaviors (rigid posture, clenched fists and jaw, grim / defiant affect, talking in a rapid / raised voice, arguing / demanding, using profanity, threatening verbalizations, agitation / pacing, pounding / slamming
Orders for Restraints
physician must renew order every 4 hours for adults and 1-2 hours for children / adolescents
Observation of Client in Restraints
Every 15 minutes
