What is the difference between biotic and abiotic?
Biotic: All the plants, animals, algae, fungi and microbes in an ecosystem (All living things)
Abiotic: The chemical and physical factors in an ecosystem (non living) for example: Temperature, moisture, salinity, soil type, light, air.
What is an ecosystem?
A community of living organisms and their physical environment.
What is a trophic level?
The position that an organism occupies in a food chain, or a group of organisms in a community that occupy the same position in food chains.
What are the order of the the group of organisms in the trophic levels?
Primary Producers, Primary Consumers, Secondary Consumer, Tertiary Consumer
What are decomposers?
Organisms that recycle material from all trophic levels.
Are plants autotrophs or heterotrophs?
They are autotrophs because they make their own food (via photosynthesis)
What are the three types of consumers?
Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores.
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
Food chains are straight lines
Food webs are more complex
What are the principles of the pyramid of numbers?
Snapshot
What are the principles of the pyramid of biomass?
Snapshot
What are the principles of the pyramid of productivity?
-
How does the structure of the pyramid affects an ecosystem?
-
What is the percentage of energy carried between trophic levels?
10%
What trophic level, when disturbed, can affect the whole ecosystem?
Primary producers.
What is the difference between interspecific and intraspecific competition?
Interspecific: Interactions between species
Interspecific: Interactions within species
What happens to the species that are weaker in competition with a stronger species?
They are eliminated or forced to move to another niche.
State a named primary producer in a marine food web.
Algae, phytoplankton, etc.
Where should you always draw when showing a food chain?
In the mouth
What is respiration?
-
What is constant dry biomass?
-
Which one of the three types of pyramid shows the flow of energy through the system?
-
What tropic level is in the most trouble?
-
Why are humans different from other top carnivores?
-
What is the difference between bioaccumulation and biomagnification
-
What is the issue with DDT?
-
What is the difference between a species and a population?
