Pendentive
a constructive device permitting the placing of a circular dome over a square room or an elliptical dome over a rectangular room.
Squinch
a structure, such as a section of vaulting, set diagonally across the interior angle between two walls to provide a transition from a square to a polygonal or more nearly circular bse on which to construct a dome.
Icon
small portable painting depicting Christ the virgin or Saints (or a combination), popular in Byzantine worship. Some icons were believed to have healing powers and miraculous powers.
Iconoclasm
destruction of holy images.
Illuminated Manuscripts
books which were a result of the Hiberno-Saxon style of art. These manuscripts were created by, what were originally, Irish monks and served to spread Christianity to everyone, even those who could not read.

the space enclosed by a lintel and an arch over a doorway
Opus modernum
Latin, “modern work.” The late medieval term for Gothic art and architecture. Also called Opus Francigenum.

A religious pardon for a sin committed.
Rayonnant
The “radiant” style of Gothic architecture, dominant in the second half of the 13th century and associated with the French royal court of Louis IX at Paris.
Keep
A fortified tower in a castle that served as a place of last refuge.
Mandorla
an oval area or panel in painting or sculpture, e.g. the area of light surrounding a representation of Jesus Christ after the Resurrection
