Equity

Equity to me is creating an inclusive environment where students feel safe, respected and accepted; regardless of their gender, race, religion, culture, or socio-economic status.

I embed equity in the classroom by selecting, rich and diverse resources, addressing bias in text and fair assessment practices

Equity is also...

Developing and implementing equitable and inclusive practices that are meet individual needs, eliminate barriers, create a sense of belonging, and include the broader community, (A barrier is an obstacle to equity that prevents or limits to opportunities, that are available to other members of society.)

Students need to see...

students need to see themselves reflected in the curriculum, visual aids, For example, Our House. It’s written by Michael Rosen, gender equality using the paper bag princess, books that come face to face with stereo types, discrimination and prejudice

Linking what we do in the classroom

Linking what we do to the classroom to real life experiences like Kwanza, Hanukkah, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Black History month and so forth. The stage can also be set where parents come into share their cultural heritage, or maybe even someone from the community, or just access board resources

Heterogeneous

Accommodations

Heterogeneous seating groups fostering interaction collaboration and cooperation

Making sure that accommodations and modifications are in place for my special need students or ELL students.

Differentiation

howI will be arranging different groupings whether explicit instruction, project or problem based, interest or ability based, remediation, reading buddies, student choice, or my choice.

Critical Literacy

Teaching critical literacy so students adopt and use the four learners like text user, meaning maker, text analyzer and code breaker. Put them in groups and let them explore bias, so they can form an opinion and defend their position. This is how I teach a facet of social action

Critical literacy goes beyond conventional, critical thinking, because it focuses on questions about fairness, equity, and social justice.

Students learn that texts are not neutral: all texts in some way reflect the choices, positions, and beliefs of their creators, and could be constructed differently to present different perspectives

Questioning is at the heart of critical literacy programming suggest the following key questions:

What is the topic?

How is it being presented?

What themes and discourses being expressed?

Who is writing to whom?

Whose positions are being expressed?

Whose voices and positions are not being expressed?

What is the text trying to do to you?

What other ways are there of writing about the topic?

What was not said about the topic? Why?

Equity is also

Equity is also introducing students to newsites or newspapers that parrot what’s going on in our world like events and current issues that are transforming our world, introducing heroes and heroines who have contributed and made a difference or a sacrifice in our world like harriet tubman, ann frank and terry fox
