What is the function of all epithelial tissues?
protection, secretion, absorbtion, excretion, and sensory reception

they are the major tissues of glands

they cover all free body surfaces inside and out, and move up glands

they lack blood vessels, it is replaced continuously

tightly packed cells
psaes
What do simple squamous epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: a single layer of tiny flattened cells through which substances pass through easily

Function: it lines the air sacs in the lungs, forms the wall of blood vessels, lymph vessels and various membranes that line the body cavities
What do simple cuboidal epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: a single layer of cube shaped cells

Function: it covers the ovaries, line most kidney tubules, the salivary glands, the thyroid, pancreas, and the liver. it carries on secretion and absorption in the kidney and various glands
What do simple columnar epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: a single layer of elongated cells

Function: it lines the uterus and digestive track, where it functions in protecting the underlying tissues, secreting digestive fluids absorbing nutrients from food
What do stratified squamous epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: many layers of flattened cells (thick)

Function: it forms the epidemus of the skin which protects the underlying cells from harmful chemicals and micro-organisms from entering

it also lines the mouth, throat, vagina, and anal canal
What do stratified cuboidal epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: two or three layers of cube shaped cells

Function: lines the larger ducts of the sweat glands and pancreas

protection
What do stratified columnar epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: two layers, top layer contains elongated cells, the bottom layer contains cube shaped cells

Function: protection and secretion

found in the male urethra and pharynx
What do pseudostratified columnar epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: appears stratified but is not. it's cells may have cilia

Function: it traps particles of dust and micro-organisms in the respiratory passage and aid in moving sex cells in the reproductive tubes

it lines the passage of the respiratory and reproductive system
What do transitional epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: specialized layers of cuboidal cells that changes in response to tension

Function: helps to prevent the contents of the urinary tract to diffusing out

forms the inner lining of the urinary bladder and passage way of the urinary system
What do glandular epithelium include and what is it's function?
Include: composed of cells and specialized to secrete substances, one or more cells constitute a gland
What are exocrine glands?
glands that secrete into ducts
What are endocrine glands?
glands that secrete into fluid or the blood
