Epidemiology

“The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to the control of health problems" -Last

Observational study

A study in which the investigator collects data on individuals to examine health-related (or other) conditions and possible associations, causes or effects but does not provide any intervention or treatment to the individuals studied.

Prospective study

A study in which a study plan is developed before initiation of data collection, then individuals are followed over time, gathering information on events or changes in the experiences or health-related data at baseline (t=0) and at least one other point in time after baseline.
