Theme
"The message"-the main subject that is being discussed or described in a piece of writing.
(Ex: The main themethroughout the fable is, "be happy with what you already have in life."
Setting
Where and when a story/passage takes place.
(Ex: By creating a 1900's Louisana Bayou setting, what point is the author trying to make?)
Plot
a series of events that form a story.
(Ex: What is the story plot's climax?)
Foreshadowing
When an author hints about what will happen later in the story.
(Ex: He felt a chill run up his spine as he walked through the dark alleyway...this foreshadows that something bad is likely to happen).
Selection
A piece or section of writing. (Ex: What is the main idea of this selection?)
Context
Words in a sentence or paragraph that gives you clues to define vocab or to figure out what is going on. (Ex: In the context of line 5 what does the word peaked mean?)
Controversy
Disagreement or argument about somehting. (Ex: Why does John show hostility to Martin in the selection).
Subheading
An addititonal headline or title that come immediatly after the main headline or title. it is usually smaller.
assertion
to say/write your opinions confidently.
Ex: the author asserted that people should never smoke because it causes cancer.
