Henderson Field on Guadalcanal Island was the focal point of the six month long Guadalcanal campaign. (August 1942 - February 1943) The Allies' first major offensive action of the Pacific War. 11 Medals of Honor were earned during this campaign including the only one awarded to a Coast guard member. US Marines took the Island from the Japanese and kept them from retaking the island. |
