Foreshadowing
A writers use of hints and clues to indicate events and situations that will occur later in the plot.
SI- It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead, the last graveyard.
Foreboding
A hint to a future bad event
SI- The bleeding tree, speaking softly the names of our dead, summer was dead.
Symbolism
When a person, place, activity or object stand for something else.
Roses stand for romance. Heart and love is a symbolism of love.
Simile
A comparison between two things using "like" or "as".
She moves like a snail.
Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things. Without using "like" or "as".
SI- There is within me a knot of cruelty born by the stream of love.
Life is one long scary roller coaster.
Personification
Figure of speech where human qualities are attributed to an object, animal, or idea.

Irony
A contradiction between what is said and what is meant or a difference between what might be expected and what actually occurs.

Imagery
Language that causes mental pictures or relates to the five senses.

Sound- the car speaker every time I hit a bump in the road.
Touch- the sharp edge of the paper cut my finger and made it sting.
Pun
The use of a word in a way that plays on its different meanings.
Theme

The author simply states the trait of the character.
Indirect characterization
The reader has to intefer (draw a conclusion) about the characters trait.
