The building blocks of syntax:

Sentence, clauses, phrases, words.

Sentences

Consists of one or several clauses

Clause

Can be defined as a group of words that contains a subject and a predicator, etc.

Main clause

A clause which is never dependent on another clause

Subclause/ or subordinate clause

A clause that functions as a clause element in the main clause.

Phrase

A grammatical unit that lacks the Subject-Verb structure of clauses. Usually consists of at least two words.

Types of phrases

5 types of phrases:


1. Noun Phrase (NP)


2. Verb Phrase (VP)


3. Adjective Phrase (AdjP)


4. Adverbial Phrase (AdvP)


5. Prepositional Phrase (PP)

Noun phrase

HEAD: a noun or pronoun

Verb Phrase

HEAD: a main verb

Adjective Phrase

HEAD: an adjective

Adverb Phrase

HEAD: an adverb

Prepositional Phrase

1st element is a preposition, 2nd an NP.
