What does AMBIGUOUS mean?

Something allows for two or more simultaneous interpretations of something, all supported by the context of a work.

The character or force that opposes the protagonist and gives rise to conflict within the story.

What is a CHARACTER?

A person presented in a dramatic or narrative work.

What is CHARACTERIZATION?

The process by which the author makes a character seem real to the reader.

What are FIGURES OF SPEECH?

Ways of using language that deviate from all literal meaning of words in order to suggest additional meanings or effects.

What is FORESHADOWING?

Early hints in a story through dialogue or imagery that suggest something to come later in the story.

What is IMAGERY?

A word, phrase, or figure of speech that addresses the senses and conveys mood.

What is IRONY?

A literary device that uses contradictory statements or situations to reveal a reality different from what appears to be true.

What is a METAPHOR?

A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without using the word like or as.

What is a NARRATOR?

The voice of the person telling the story

The central meaning or dominant idea in a literary work.

What is a TONE?

The overall mood of a story that has to do with the author's implicit attitude toward the reader or the things in a work as revealed by the author's style.

What is ALLITERATION?

The repetition of the same consonant sounds in a sequence of words

What is ALLUSION?

A brief reference to a person, place, things, event, or idea in history or literature.

What is ASSONANCE?

The repetition of internal vowel sounds in nearby words that do not end the same.

What is CONNOTATION?

Association and implication that goes beyond the literal meaning of a word and derives from how the word is commonly used.

What is DENOTATION?

The dictionary (or literal) meaning of a word.

What is DICTION?

A poet's choice of words, phrases, and figurative language which combine to create meaning.

What is a LYRIC?

A type of brief poem that expresses the personal emotions and thoughts of a single speaker.

What is a METER?

A rhythmic pattern of stressed syllables that recurs in a poem.

What is a PERSONA?

An entity created by the writer to speak in a poem.

A poetic device that attributes human characteristics to nonhuman things.

What is RHYME?

The repetition of identical or similar concluding syllables in different words, usually at the ends of lines.

What is RYTHM?

A grouping of lines, set off by a space, that usually has a set pattern of meter and rhyme.

What is a STRESS?
