What exactly are philosophers trying to explain when talking about an "enduring self"?
Our persistence through time and through change.
What does Socrates say about our enduring self?
He believed that EVERYday we become a "new" person. He rejects idea that we are the same if we stay in the same form.
If one of your relatives are diagnosed with alzheimers...how does this affect their enduring self?
(Memory & the enduring self)
If the memory fails, then according to the memory theory there is no connection between your present form and past form.
In the Babylon 5 episode of "Passing Through Gethsemene"-- when the monk's memory was "wiped" did his enduring self still exist? Why or why not?
The mind wipe only temporarily covered up his thoughts. Things triggered the memory of his crimes. Even though he didn't remember right away, HE (his self) still commited the crimes.
What are issues with the enduring self and a material body?
1. How can a non-material thing (the self, soul) be detected in something that is material (the body)?
2.We can remove material things from our body, but the self cannot be detected for removal...so where is it??
3. Can a non-material thing (the self) and material thing (the body) be connected??
