source and target of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
source: Anterior pituitary, triggered by GnRH from the hypothalamus
target: males- sustentacular cells females - ovarian follicle |
effects of Follicle stimulating hormone
FSH stimulates the sustentacular cells in the testes to produce androgen-binding protein, which reacts with testosterone to stimulate spermatogenesis. In females, FSH stimulates antral follicles to secrete estradiol.
source and target of lutenizing hormone (LH)
source: Anterior pituitary, triggered by GnRH from the hypothalamus
target: in males, the interstitial cells of the testes. In females, mature follicles and corpus luteum |
effects of lutenizing hormone
In males, LH stimulates interstitial cells to produce testosterone.
In females, a surge of LH causes the oocyte to go through meiosis I to meiosis II, causing the follicle to rupture and ovulation to occur. Also, stimulates the corpus luteum to secrete progesterone. |
source and target of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
source: Anterior pituitary, triggered by TRH from the hypothalamus
target: thyroid gland |
effects of thyroid stimulating hormone
stimulates the follicular cells of the thyroid to secrete T3 and T4.
source and target of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
source: Anterior pituitary
target: zona fasciculata of adrenal cortex |
effects:ACTH stimulates zona fasciculata releases cortisol
