What is excreted rapidly?
Catecholamines

peptide hromones
What resists excretion?
Protein bound hromones (steroids)
Down regulation
High extracellular concentration of hormone remains for a prolonged time resulting in the target cells decrease in receptors
Up regulation
Cell is exposed for a long time a very low concentration of hormone which results in the target cell producing more receptors for that particular hormone.
Short loop feedback mechanism
Signalling of hypothalamus is provided by the hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland.
Insensitive
Usually very high concentrations need as a result

Happens when target organ (thyroid) is destroyed or not functioning or uptaking anterior pituitary hormones.
Long loop feedback mechanisms
Hormones synthesised in the target organ have an effect on the anterior pituitary (direct) or hypothalamus (indirect)
Ultra short loop feedback
hypothalamic releasing hormones act on hypothalamus receptors to inhibit their release.
