Diuretics

Drugs that assist the body in getting rid of excess fluid and increase the quantity of urine. Most work by stimulating the kidneys to release more sodium. There are three or four categories based on how they work on the kidneys.

Insulin

Peptide hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreatic islets. Helps control blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetic patients.

Rapid-Acting Insulin

Takes effect in about five minutes, peaks at an hour, lasts 2-4 hours.


Ex. Humulin R, Novolin R

Regular or Short-Acting Insulin

Takes effect within 30 minutes, peaks in 2-3 hours, and lasts 3-6 hours.


Ex. Humalog, NovoLog, Apidra

Intermediate-Acting Insulin

Takes effect 2-4 hours after injection, peaks 4-12 hours, lasts 12-18 hours.


Ex. Humulin N, Novolin N.

Long-Acting Insulin

Takes effect 6-10 hours after injection, lasts 20-24 hours.


Ex. Lantus, Levemir

Insulin Mixtures

Have a quick onset and longer duration because they are short-acting insulin mixed with intermediate-acting insulin. Dosed twice daily.


Ex. NovoLog Mix 70/30, Humalog Mix 75/25, Humulin 70/30.

Testosterone

Male sex hormone. Women also produce it, but men produce it 8 to 10 times more. It is responsible for libido, protection against osteoporosis, and reduces the elimination of protein from the body (causing an increase in muscle size).

Estrogen and Progesterone

Female sex hormones. Produced by the ovaries. These hormones tell the female body when to ovulate, build up the appropriate uterine lining, and generally prepare the body for pregnancy.

Birth Control

Combine some form of either estrogen and progesterone or only progesterone and prevent a woman's body from getting pregnant.
