purpose
provides an alternative method of IV access without the iv bag or tubing
indications (2)
1) IV access in a non-trauma pt who does not need fluid
-respiratory distress,
-cx pn
-CVA
-hypertensive

2) Temporary conversion of an IV line in a trauma pt who requires movement over difficult terrain
-vertical rescue
contraindications (3)
1) trauma pt's (except for temporary moves)

2) pt's who are likely to need fluid resuscitation

3) any pt showing signs of impending shock
Procedure
EMT I and P
1) cleanse skin and initate IV access with usual IV catheter
2) attached preflushed T-connector with IV plug attached (use sterile NS or sterile water)
3) secure catether to pt
4) irrigate with sterile normal saline or sterile water to remove blood from plug and catheter
5) inject sterlie normal saline to completely flush plug and IV cath (0.5 ml)

if more fluids are needed
-remove plug and insert regular iv tubing
-piggyback iv tubing to saline lock using lever lock cannula or other needleless supplies

alternate method = skip t connector and insert plug directly into hub of IV catheter. (may move cath, causing discomfort)
