acute coronary syndrome
a blanket term used to represent any symptoms related to lack of oxygen in the heart muscle
acute myocardial infarction
condition in which a portion of the myocardium dies as a result of lack of oxygen (heart attack)
Aneurysm
the dilation or ballooning of a weakened section of the wall of an artery
angina pectoris
pain in the chest when the blood supply to the heart is reduced
apnea
no breathing
asystole
when the heart has ceased generating electrical impulses
bradycardia
when the heart rate is slow below 60
cardiac compromise
blanket term that refers to a heart problem with a rapid onset
congestive heart failure
the failure of the heart to pump efficiently leading to excessive blood or fluids in the lungs the body or both
coronary artery disease
disease that affects the the arteries of the heart
dyspnea
shortness of breath; labored or difficult breathing
dysrhythmia
a disturbance in heart rate and rhythm
edema
swelling resulting from a build up of fluid in the tissues
embolism
blockage of a vessel by a clot of foreign material brought to the site by the blood current
nitroglycerin
a medication that dilates the blood vessels
occlusion
blockage as of an artery by fatty deposits
pedal edema
accumulation of fluid in the feet and/or ankles
pulmonary edema
collection of fluid in the lungs
pulseless electrical activity
condition in which the hearts electrical rhythm remains relatively normal, yet the mechanical pumping activity fails to follow the electrical activity causing cardiac arrest
sudden death
cardiac arrest that occurs within 2 hours of he onset of symptoms. they may have no prior symptoms
tachycardia
when the heart rate is fast above 100
thrombus
a clot formed of blood and plaque attached to the inner wall of an artery or vein
ventricular fibrillation
a condition in which the hearts electrical impulses are disorganized, preventing the heart muscle from contracting normally
Ventricular tachycardia
condition where the heartbeat is quite rapid, if rapid enough the heart chambers wont be able to refill causing low blood flow
Atherosclerosis
build up of fatty deposits on the inner wall arteries
Arteriosclerosis
hardening of the artery wall resulting from calcium deposits
Ischemia
dying cells from the lack of perfusion
what are the four main things in the cardiac chain of survival?
Early access, early cpr, early defibrillation, early advance care
When would you not defibrillate?
if laying in water or is wet, if they are touching metal, have a medicine patch on or somebody is touching them.
