what happens to the blastocyst as it penetrates and implants into the endometrial lining?
the trophoblast differentiates into the cytotrophoblast and the Syncytiotrophoblast this happens about day 6 of fertilization
the embryoblast (inner cell mass) also differentiates into 2 layers the epiblast and the hypoblast |
what do the epiblast and hypoblast do after implantation
the epiblast forms the amniotic cavity and the hypoblast forms the yolk cavity together they make up the bilaminar disc
what is the function of human chorionic gonadotropin after implantation
Signals the ovary to continue to secrete
hormones to maintain the pregnancy |
what are the highly sensitive period of pregnancy
weeks 3-8 is when most of the major structures, heart, CNS, limbs, eyes, etc are beginning to form
where does the mesoderm come from?
Extraembryonic mesoderm is a new layer of cells derived from the epiblast. its develops b/t the cytotrophoblast and the amniotic and yolk cavity (epiblast and hypoblast) XE coelom begins to form with splits in the extraembryonic mesoderm
what does the XE mesoderm do
it creates the XE cavity and with the trophoblast (cytotrophoblast, Syncytiotrophoblast) makes the chorion and the connecting stalk which will become the umbilical cord. this is all at about 13 days
what are the chorionic villi
the form as extensions that bring blood to the embryo
what do the terms somatic and splanchnic mean
somatic-wall of body cavity (skeletal muscle) splanchnic- visceral, internal organs
what is the purpose of gasturlation
to form the 3 germ layers
what is the primative streak
line that forms on the embryotic disk (epiblasts) that marks the beginning of gastrulation (forming of 3 germ layers)
Give the cell lineages starting with the inner cell mass and ending with 3 germ layers
ICM--->epiblast, hypoblast, epiblast-->embryonic epiblast, amnion. Embryonic epiblast--> all three germ layers. hypoblast -->yolk
what are Sacrococcygeal Teratoma
remnants of primative streak, tumor of all three germ layers attached to infant
what is the notochord
it arises from mesoderm in the embryonic disk, is the primative axis of the embryo, will later be replaced by the vertebrate
Functions of the Notochord: • Structure - acts as a rigid axis around which the embryo develops • Skeletal - foundation upon which the vertebral column (vertebral bodies) will form • Induction - will bring about formation of the neural tube (future nervous system) |
what are the major events of week three
Appearance of primitive streak
(organization of the embryo) •Differentiation of the three primary germ layers •Development of the notochord |
