Henry VII came to the throne

when the Wars of the Roses ended.

Henry VII's son Arthur

married the Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon.

Henry VIII was

Henry VII's second son.

In 1521 he was granted

the title of "The Defender of the Faith" by the Pope.

Henry VIII married his brother's

widow, Catherine of Aragon, by special dispensation.

Catherine of Aragon never gave him

a male heir.

Henry the VIII asked the Pope for a

divorce in order to marry Anne Boleyn.

With the Act of Supremacy (1534) he

broke with the Pope and declared himself "Supreme head of the Church of England".

Anne Boleyn gave him a

second daughter, Elizabeth.

Only the third wife, Jane Seymour, gave him

a male heir, Edward.

Anne Boleyn was tried and executed

for treason in 1536.

Mary I refused to

abandon her Catholic religion and married the Catholic Philip of Spain.

She was called "Bloody Mary"

because she burnt a lot of Protestants.



Elizabeth came to the throne

in 1588.



She could speak

French, Latin and Italian with ease.

She restored the Church of England but

granted Catholics freedom of worship.

She was unmarried and used

this as a political weapon.

She was caled the "Virgin Queen"

because he was married only with her people.

English sea captains like Walter Raleigh were

secretly encouraged by the Queen in their piracy against Spanish ships.

In 1588 The Spanish Armada invaded England

but was defeated also because of strong winds and terrible rain.
