Setting
A description of the time and place of a story, most often established early on in the story.
Point of View
A vantage point from which the writer tells the story. (1st or 3rd person)
Conflict
A struggle between opposing characters or opposing forces in the story. (external or internal).
Climax
Following the conflict and complications, this is the point of highest tension in the story.
Resolution
Following the climax, the falling action in the story and the ultimate outcome of the conflict at the conclusion of the story.
Protagonist
The central or main character in a story.
Antagonist
The character who opposes, or is in direct conflict with, the protagonist.
Foreshadowing
The use of hints or clues in a story to suggest what event(s) will occur further on in the story.
Tone
The attitude the author takes toward his subject and characters, or the “mood” of the story.
Theme
The basic meaning of the story.
