The Spanish preterite ("el pretérito") is generally used to describe actions that:
1) happened only once
(e.g., "I went to the store yesterday.")
2) happened more than once, but with a specific end
(e.g., "He read the book five times.")
3) mark the beginning or the end of a process
(e.g., "It began to rain.")

CASO ESPECIAL 1: Verbs that have an e → ie or e → i root/stem change in the present tense also have... e → i root/stem change in the 3rd-person forms of the preterite!

CASO ESPECIAL 2: The verbs "morir" and "dormir" have the following 3rd person root/stem change in the preterite:

morir = murió, murieron
dormir = durmió, durmieron
