Slide: Early Life
John was named after a religious minister in hopes that he would receive the calling to become one himself. His alcoholic father left the family to live with two Indian women when Watson was 13 years old, John never forgave him. Due to the fact, Watson and his mother were on the verge of poverty; they moved to Greenville, South Carolina to open up more opportunities for John to become successful. Watson understood that college was important to his success as an individual.

Watson earned his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1903.
In 1908, Watson was offered and accepted a faculty position at Johns Hopkins University and was immediately promoted to chair of the psychology department.
He was later asked to leave In October 1920, because of publicity surrounding the affair he was having with his graduate student-assistant Rosalie Rayner.
After the divorce was finalized, Watson and Rayner married in 1921. They remained together until her death in 1935

Watson began teaching psychology at John Hopkins University in 1908. According to John Watson, psychology should be the science of observable behavior. "Psychology as the behaviorist views it is a purely objective experimental branch of natural science. Its theoretical goal is the prediction and control of behavior.
