What is nitrogen fixation? |
Nitrogen fixation is when nitrogen gas in the atmosphere is turned into ammonia by bacteria (like Rhizobium and Azotobacter). The ammonia can then be used by plants. |
N2 > NH3 |

Where is Rhizobium found? |
Rhizobium are found inside root nodules (growths on the roots) of leguminous plants (e.g. peas, beans and clovers). They form a mutalistic relationship with the plants as they provide the plant with nitrogen compounds and the plant provides them with carbohydrates. |
leguminous, mutalistic |

Where are Azotobacter found? |
Azotobacter are found living in the soil. They don't form mutalistic relationships with plants. |
