Economy - Definition

institution that organizes the production, distribution and consumption of goods


- represents how we produce the material things we need to survive

17th century: families structed by household economy - all worked together

19th century- merchant capitalist invested money accumulated through trade in production -> wage labor increased


1920s: family became institution that produced emotional satisfaction not goods--> heterosexual relations changed - needed children for labor


1970s: wage labor released sexuality from need to procreate - ppl could excerise their sexual expressions


WWII: new erotic situation provided for homosexual expression/


Post WWII: oppression by state- exclusion of homosexuals/ state controllnig sexuality ex- banned homos from being employed




State - definition

- political institutions/ nationwide drew a certain geographical area together as a political entity


- operated through a centralized government that determines civil laws and citizens freedoms as well as provides public goods and services


ex- administrate, legal system, military, religion


- Theorcracy--> state organized aroudn set of beliefs



Sexuality & the State

- state and capitalism have different tolerance for sexual diversity


- economically compliant; when we consume we fall into capitalist hands


-sexual diversity is good for business


- state usually aims to constrain sexuality from greater good


- inspecting state: yields power by monitoring citizens sexual behaviours / creates sexuality disciplined subjects- Foucault

- Pornography- being cracked down by te state of non -heterosexual pornography- sexuality being constrained by the state through which ways we can behave sexuality (censorship)

Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885- reduced criminal charge for sodomites which meant they didnt need proof that they were gay so therefore were able to convict people and place them in jail for two years

- state becomes rich from sex trade industry therefore they allow it to be legal
