What is the Calyx
The entire collection of sepals on a flower
What is the perianth
The combination of the calyx and corolla on a flower
What is the sporophyte generation
The diploid generation that produces spores
What is the gametophyte generation
The haploid generation that produces gametes
What is a Carpel/Pistil
Vase-like structure in the center of the flower. Consists of an ovary, stigma, and style.
What is a style
The stalk portion of the carpel/pistil
What is a stigma
The swelled top of the carpel/pistil
What is monoecious
Plants with flowers that are only male or female but both are found on the same plant
What is dioecious
Plants with flowers that are either all male or all female for a single plant.
What is androecium
A plant's entire male reproductive unit.
What is gynoecium
A plant's entire female reproductive unit.
What is the nucellus
Inside the ovule, directly surrounds the megasporocyte. Functions as a megasporangium. May develop into the perisperm to feed the embryo.
What is the exine
The pollen coat derived from the tapetum. Composed of sporopollenin and has a pore opening.
What is the endosperm
Developed by fusion of a sperm cell with the two polar nuclei. Usually becomes a food source for the embryo.
What are the nucelllus and the megagametophyte
Parts of the ovule that develop into the seed following fertilization.
What is an ovary
The swollen base of a carpel/pistil. Contains ovules and will develop into a fruit following fertilization.
What is the superior/hypogynous ovary position
An ovary position where the sepals, petals, and stamen are below the ovary
What is the inferior/epigynous ovary position
An ovary position where the sepals, petals, and stamen are above the ovary
What is the funiculus
The connection between an ovule and the placenta in the ovary
Sporogenesis in Gynoecium
megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to produce 4 megaspores. 3 cells degenerate, one survives and undergoes 3 mitotic divisions. Produces a mature female gametophyte/megagametophyte with 7 cells/8 nuclei
Sporogenesis in Androecium
Microspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to produce 4 microspores. Microspores are together initially as a tetrad. Split apart and undergo mitosis into a mature pollen grain containing a generative cell and a tube cell.
What is the pericarp
Composed of three layers formed from the ovary wall during fruit development.
What are the exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp
The three layers of pericarp formed from the ovary wall during fruit development.
