What is the ultimate source of energy?

Sunlight

What types of organisms can be found at each trophic level?

1st: producers

2nd: primary consumers

3rd: secondary consumers (omnivores)

4th: tertiary consumers (carnivores)

What do the arrows represent in a food chain or web?

He flow of energy and who eats who.

How does energy flow through a system?

10% rule

What are the levels of organization from lease encompassing to most?

Species ---> population ---> community ---> ecosystem ---> biome ---> biosphere

Why can't there be more than 4 or 5 levels in any single food chain?

Once you get to a higher level there's not enough energy

10% rule?

Roughly 10% of energy is transferred from level to the next. 90% as lost as heat into the environment

Niche?

The role a species plays in a community; it's total way of life

Limiting Factor?

In need biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence of organisms and specific environment a little too long

Commensalism?

πŸ™‚/😐

Parasitism?

πŸ™‚/πŸ™

Mutualism?

πŸ™‚/πŸ™‚

Evaporation?

The process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas. This usually happens during the day as sun heats the atmosphere and earth

Transpiration?

It is the evaporation of water from the leaves of plants

Condensation?

Occurs when moist air begins to cool and water droplets form into clouds

Precipitation?

When the water droplets become large enough and when the water returns to the earths surface

Runoff?

The precipitation making its way back to River, stream, ocean or lake

Seeps?

Some of the water goes into the soil and enters plants through the roots and then the process begins again

Nitrogen cycle?

Nitrogen in air - soil - nitrogen fixing bacteria - amonia - nitrates - plants use as form of nitrogen to make their DNA.

Where is the phosphorus cycle placed?

Rock

Carrying capacity?

Maximum Number of organisms that live somewhere based on the food, water, and free space there

The two types of succession?

Primary - pioneer species

Secondary - already life there
