Ecology definition
The study of the inter relationships between organisms and their physcial and biological environments
Abiotic Environment
Physical environment; all nonliving aspects of the environment
Biotic Environment
Biological envrionment; all living organsims present in environment
Environmentalist
Person who is concerned with the impacts of humans on the natural world and generally believes in the conservation and preservation of natural resources THEY DO NOT NEED OT BE AN ECOLOGIST
Ecologist
Person who studies ecology and may or may not be an environmentalist
Levels of Biological Organization
In order: molecule, cell, tissues, organs, individual organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere. Ecologists need to be trained in all; domain is individual to biosphere
Two Fundamental Issues for Ecology ****
The abundance and distribution of living organisms; and the processes by which materials and energy move between living and non living systems
Two divergent approaches to ecology***
1.) Basic Research ; 2.) Applied research
What is basic research?
It is motivated by intellectual curiousity; question oriented; goal is to further knowledge. Basic research is open ended; typically yields more questions than answers
What is applied research?
It is not motivated by cirousity rather by human needs or problems; solution oriented; goal is to acheive a tangible result; Reasons are to prevent mistakes from happening or from happening again. It is often after the fact or predictive. Ie Nuclear Plant
