What is a population?
* all the members of a species living in the same place at the same time.
Properties of populations?
*density, size and dispersion
density
*the number of individuals per unit area or volume
dispersion
*is relative distribution or arrangement of its individuals within a given amount of space.
How does a population grow?
*birth rate - death rate.
**change in population = births-deaths |
Reproductive potential
*this rate is limited by the maximum number of offspring that each member of the population can produce.
Exponential growth
*grows faster and faster.
*occurs when the populations have plenty of food and space with little to no competition. |
Carrying Capacity
*the maximum population that the ecosystem can support indefinitely.
Resource limits
*species reaches its carrying capacity when it consumes a particular natural resource at the same rate at which the ecosystem produces the resources.
*species compete directly or indirectly |
Territory
*is an area defended by one or more individuals against other individuals.
*value is for space, food, shelter and breedomg sites. |
2 types of population regulation
1. density dependent
2. density independent |
Niche
*the unique role of a species within an ecosystem.
*includes the species physical home, environmental factors, and interactions with other organisms. |
5 interactions between 2 species
*see chart on pr. 218 |
1. competition
2. predation and parasitism 3.mutualism 4. commensalism 5.symbiosis and coevolution |
Competition
*each species negatively affects the other
Predation and parasitism
*one species feeds on the other
Mutualism
*each species is helpful to the other
Commensalism
*one species benefits from another species, but the species is not affected.
Competiton
indirect competition
