Airfield Familiarization.
Airfield familiarization is essential to personnel learning how to perform their duties for their personal safety and the safety of the aircrew.
Safety Guidelines
being FOD free, wearing your PPE, being qualified, and keeping your head on a swivel
Flight Line Safety Equipment
- Flight deck (steel-toed) safety shoes
- Cranial impact helmet
- Protective eye goggles
- Leather gloves.
Runways
AC takeoff and landing
Threshold markings
parallel stripes on the ends of the runways 12ft x 150 ft, designates landing area
Overrun area
paved or unpaved section on the ends of the runways, provide a reasonably effective decceleration area for aborting or overshooting AC
MA-1 Series Overrun Barrier
designed to stop tricyle landing gear equipped AC not equipped with tail hook
-always on standby in case of aborted takeoff or emergency overrun landing
Emergency shore based recovery equipment
used during inflight emergency that requires stopping the AC during landing in the shortest distance possible to minimize the chance of injury to pilot or aircrew and dmg to AC
Taxiways
paved areas for AC to move between parking aprons, runways and airfield services
Parking apron
open paved areas adjacent to hangars, fuel, services often called the flight line. Used for parking, servicing, and loading the AC, connected to runways & taxiways
Compass cal pad (compass rose)
paved , magnetically uiet area where AC compass is cal'd
Runway numbering system
numbered in relation to their magnetic heading to nearest 10 degrees (250=25)
-If 2 runways: 25L & 25R (left, right)
-If 3 runways: 25C (for center)
Airfield rotating beacon
when the airport is below VFR weather conditions day or night, the airport rotating beacon is used to identify the airports location. Rotates clockwise at a constant speed.
