When and where did the Easter rising take place

The Easter rising took place on Monday 24th - Saturday 29th April 1916 in Dublin, ireland

What where 3 causes of the Easter rising?

1. The long lasting religious, culural and economic conflict with britian, raising distrust by enforcing laws, like the penal laws, restricting the Irish of religion and land!


2. The third home rule bill, not fuffiling what was promised, in regards to Irish independence


3. WW1 provides cover for importing weaponry into Ireland, and also meant that many English soldiers were away!

What was the damage to Ireland?

5 million dolars worth of damage to dublin and over 1500 dead

What early restrictions were placed on the Irish?

The first conflict began in the 12th century with king Henry 2nd attempting to anglicise Ireland ( forcing them to change religion) he did this by making the penal laws, which restricted Irish tradition and catholicness

What land did the English take, and what was the response?

The land was confiscated from Irish rebels, who tired to rebel against the English settlement of Ireland. They were then sold to Anglicans, or abstantee landlords, who were oversea landlords, who charged a very high rent rate. The response was hard towards the English, and further raised distrust.

What was the potato famine and what did it do for the relationship toward a England and Ireland.

The potato famine was a famine in Ireland, that meant that all good was plagued, nearly 1 million Irish died, and over 15000 evicted to other countries, after stealing food from wealthy landlords. This worsened the relationship as it showed the Irish that they could not rely on England.

When was the third home rule bill introduce and what did it plan to do?

The third home rule bill was introduced in 1912, and was promised to bring Irish independance, and a self governed nation.

It also have the irb a reason to use violence as it showed them that they would not get what they wanted peacefully!

What where the consequences of the Easter rising?

1. One short term consequence of the Easter rising was the death and imprisonment of the rebels! The executions were quick and secret, despite the public, initially encouraging the idea, as many Irish civilians were killed! However after the announcements of the kills, people were shocked, and the 16 killed were name the "16 martyrs"


2. The rise of Sinn Fein and the dail. The deaths of the prisoners changed the Irish oppinions about the British, after the damage done by the British was not repaired. People wanted to be separated from England. In December 1918 Sinn Fein won the election with 48% of votes, giving them the majority of the Irish parliment!


3. The Anglo Irish war. This was a guerilla war between northern and southern ireland. And involved 7500 ira soldiers that fought 8000 black and tans (who were ww1 veterans). In 1921 5500 of the 7500 ira members were in jail, and 1400 had been killed. Eventually the English negotiated a truce, and offered that the northern section of Ireland be ruled by England, and the southern an independent nation.

Who where the 2 main leaders of the Easter rising?

James Conolly and Patrick Pearce
