Discuss why Israel split into two kingdoms and mention its resulting judgment and consequences.
Oppressive taxation instituted by Solomon, and his son, Rehoboam's, additional tax increase, divided the kingdom into two camps. The northern tribes rebelled and made Jeroboam king, while the southern tribes became the kingdom of Judah, remaining loyal to Rehoboam. The divide resulted not only in constant warfare, but idolatry as well. Eventually God judged Israel in 722 BC and allowed them to be taken captive by the vicious Assyrians; the Chaldeans, also called the Babylonians, destroyed Jerusalem in 586BC and carried many Jews to Babylonia under Nebuchadnezzar's command.
How is it evident that God did not forsake His people following these judgments?
God raised up the Persians under Cyrus to free His people from their captivity after the Persians conquered Babylon in 539 BC
