What are the two primary protocols on which the Internet is based?
Transmission control protocol and Internet protocol.
What protocols are used to send e-mail and which to receive e-mail?
Simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) is used to send e-mail. Post office protocol (POP) and interactive mail access protocol (IMAP) are used for receiving and storing e-mail. File transfer protocol (FTP) is used to retrieve files from computers on the network. The hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) was developed to support the transmission of hypertext markup language (HTML) files for the Web.
What are three Internet applications that predate the Web?
Telnet, FTP, and e-mail.
What is the order of the development of HTML, SGML, and XML?
SGML was first, then HTML, and most recently XML.
If a Web server interacts with a database, how many tiers would there be in this client/server architecture?
3
What is a network call that uses Internet protocols and applications but is only available within a single company?
Intranet
What are the two type broadband Internet access available to consumers?
ADSL and cable modem.
What are the differences between HTML and XML documents?
HTML describes how to render the document XML describes data within the document in addition to HTML features.
What are the options for Internet access? What connection speeds? What equipment costs? Where the setup and monthly fees?
One could graph the capacity of the server, connection speeds, and e-commerce software and relate a dollar value to the various levels of performance. This set of graphs is outmoded when drawn, and clearly would have a different price performance relationship next year.
Why would a two-tier architecture be inadequate for a firm engaged in electronic commerce?
Two-tier architecture serves up only static web pages.
Discuss the evolution of features and benefits to users and Web site designers of the three different versions of Web markup languages.
SGML establishes the standard for both HTML and XML. HTML defines how a page should be rendered. XML defines the data contained within the page. HTML is ideal for one-way communication of static information. XML allows for an exchange of data between companies, much the same as EDI.
