Plate Tectonics
The theory that the Earth's outer shell consists on individual plates that move, thereby producing earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and the crust itself.
Seafloor Spreading
The process of producing new seafloor between two divergent plates.
Ocean-Continental Convergence
The edge of the continental plate will remain floating and the oceanic plate will sink beneath the lithosphere. This causes the mantel to heat, thereby causing volcanoes.
Ocean-Ocean Convergence
One plate goes beneath the other , which will initiate volcanic activity. However, the volcanoes form on the ocean floor and can eventually become a chain of islands.
Continental Rifts
Spreading centers that can develop within a continent. These will form rift valleys, and may possibly split a continent.
