Furosemide (Lasix)

If pt. is already taking furosemide at home, administer twice the pt's usual single daily dose up to a maximum of 100 mg. Pediatric Dose: not used in prehospital setting |

Drug Action
|
-Peripheral vasodilator: Decreases peripheral vascular resistance
Decreases cardiac workload and oxygen demand on the heart. Increases water excretion by inhibiting reabsorbtion of water, sodium and chloride in the kidneys. |

Indications
|
Pulmonary edema due to CHF or kidney failure.
NOTE: common problems occure in EMS when a pt. is incorrectly diagnosed in the field as having "pulmonary edema" but actually has pneumonia. |
