What is Divino Afflante Spiritu?
Encyclical letter promulgated by Pius XII on September 30, 1943, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Providentissimus Deus, Leo XIII, 1893
What was Pius XII's obersvation about academic research methods?
Pius XII noted that much had changed in archeology and historical research.
What is the significance of DAS?
DAS revived Catholic biblical scholarship. In particular, Pius XII encouraged scholars to study Hebrew and Greek texts rather than the Latin Vulgate, and encouraged new translations.
What were the conditions placed on biblical exegesis?
1) return to the original texts, 2) interpretation based on literal sense, 3) consider the personality of the author, literary forms used (including the ancient's understanding of history), 4) the contributions of archeology, history, 5) the literature of other peoples of time period
What does DAS say about the role of the Vulgate?
The Vulgate is primarily juridical (free from error in faith and morals) rather than critical.
What did DAS teach about the quality of translations?
Great attention should be given to explain the original texts which have more authority than any translation. This "art" of studying a text to ferret out the original form as best as possible is textual criticism (16-17).
