Causes:
Risk factors: family history, age, race, gender, diabetes, smoking, high salt intake, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and low dietary intake of potassium, calcium & magnesium Interaction of environmental and genetic factors Systolic: left ventricular failure (LV hypertrophy, O2 requirement not met) Diastolic: decrease in cardiac perfusion (O2 delivery decreases, ATP down) |
Manifestations:
Generally asymptomatic Headache Nocturia (urinating at night) Angina pectoris Edema Dementia Blindness Disease Predisposition: Atherosclerosis Coronary heart disease Nephrosclerosis Kidney disease Dementia & cognitive impairment |
