Superior

Above or in higher position to a given point of reference

The knees are superior to the ankles.

Inferior

Below or in a lower position to a given point of reference.

The neck is inferior to the head.

Anterior or ventral

Toward the front of the body or in front of.

The nose is an anterior structure.

Posterior or dorsal

Toward the back of the body, or in back of.

The spine is a posterior structure.

Medial

Toward the middle of the body.

The heart is a medial structure.

Lateral

Toward the side of the body.

The shoulder is lateral to the sternum.

Central

Toward the center.

The bone is central to the skin.

Peripheral

Away from the center.

Proximal

Means nearest to, pertaining to the beginning or nearer point of attachment.

The elbow is proximal to the wrist.

Distal

Means farthest away from the point of origin, away from the beginning or farther away from the point of attachment.

The elbow is distal to the shoulder.

Cranial

Toward the head.

The heart is cranial to the pelvis.

Caudal

Toward the lower end of the spine or the tail of the body.

The lumbar vertebrae is caudal to the thoracic vertebrae.

Closer to the surface of the body.

The skin is a superficial structure.

Deep

Closer to the middle center of the body.

The heart is a deep structure.
