How light affects the eyes

The cornea, lens, and iris gather and control the amount of light allowed to enter the eye.

The image is focused with the retina

The retina:

- Cones: good for day vision, light, and color; takes 2-3 minutes to adapt after moving into a dark area

- Rods: good for night vision; central blind spot, look off center to view; full dark adaptation takes 30 minutes, but will function in 3 minutes

Night Vision Aids

Don't rush into ambient light conditions; give your eyes time to adjust.

When using a flashlight, quick flashes will hurt your night vision less than a continuous beam.

Blink slowly

Roll your eyes
