Esophagus
The passage between the pharynx and the stomach, a muscular tube with a squamous epithelium lining and mucus glands.
Stomach
Large muscular sac that continues the mechanical and chemical digestion of food.
Duodenum
The first part of small intestine. Most digestion takes place here. Chemicals are released from the liver, the gall bladder, and the pancreas.
Ileum
The last and longest portion of the small intestine, extends from the jejunum to the caecum of the large intestine.
Large Intestine
The last section of the digestive system, where water is absorbed from food and the remaining material is eliminated from the body.
Small Intestine
The part of the digestive system responsible for most chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Caecum
The cavity in which the large intestine begins and into which the ileum opens.
Appendix
A small, fingerlike extension of the vertebrate caecum; contains a mass of white blood cells that contribute to immunity, but has no function in the digestive system.
Pancreas
A gland located behind the stomach that secretes pancreatic juice into the duodenum, where it mixes with bile to digest food.
Gall Bladder
An organ that stores bile produced by the liver until it is needed in the duodenum.
Liver
Large organ just above the stomach that makes bile to break down fats; also filters poisons and drugs out of the blood.
Pharynx
Muscular tube at the end of the throat that connects the mouth with the rest of the digestive tract and serves as a passageway for air and food.
Larynx
The area of the throat that contains the vocal cords and produces vocal sounds.
Trachea
The windpipe; a passage through which air moves in the respiratory system.
Buccal cavity
The cavity between the jaws and the cheeks.
Epiglottis
A flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe and prevents food from entering
Diaphragm
Muscular partition that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity and aids in respiration by moving up and down.
Rectum
A short tube at the end of the large intestine where waste material is compressed into a solid form before being eliminated.
Jejunu
The middle portion of the small intestine (between the duodenum and ileum) where chemical digestion ends and absorption begins.
