Where is the liver located?
The liver is inferior to the diaphragm and occupies most of the right hypochondriac and part of the epigastric regions.
What is the function of the liver?
Carb, lipid, protien metabolism. Processing of drugs, excretion of billirubin, synthesis of bile salts, storage of A,B,D,E,K,Iron, and Copper. Phagocytosis, and activation of Vitamin D
Where is the gallbladder located?
IN a depression of the posterior surface of the liver and hangs from anterior inferior margin of liver.
What is the function of the gallbladder?
The function of the gallbladder is to store bile and concentrate.
What are the four types of cholesterol?
chylomicrons, VLDL, LDL, and HDL.
Chylomicrons
are the least dense of all the lipoproteins and are basically just big balls of fat (triglycerides), with a makeup of about 90 percent fat, a touch of phospholipids, some cholesterol, and a smidgin of protein
VLDL
very low-density lipoprotein) carries a great amount of fat, some phospholipids, and cholesterol. The high fat content of VLDL makes a large quantity of this lipoprotein in the blood undesirable.
LDL
low-density lipoprotein, has only a fraction of the fat and double the protein of VLDL and is very high in cholesterol. This lipoprotein carries the majority of cholesterol in the blood and is considered the unhealthy one.
HDL
(high-density lipoprotein,) is a spherical blob of mostly protein (albeit a type different from that found in LDL), some cholesterol, phospholipids, and very little fat. The densest of all the lipoproteins, HDL is the healthy one.
Pepsin
Pepsin is an enzyme in the stomach that begins the digestion of proteins by splitting them into smaller pieces. It is a gastric protease; pepsin is secreted in an inactive form, pepsinogen, which is activated by stomach acid. enzyme produced in the mucosal lining of the stomach that acts to degrade protein.
Cholecystokinin or CCK
is a peptide hormone of the gastrointestinal system responsible for stimulating the digestion of fat and protein.
Gastrin
is a hormone that stimulates secretion of gastric acid (HCl) by the parietal cells of the stomach and aids in gastric motility
Bile
produced by the liver of most vertebrates, that aids the process of digestion of lipids in the small intestine. In many species, bile is stored in the gallbladder and upon eating is discharged into the duodenum
Salivary Amylase
Amylase is an enzyme that breaks starch down into sugar. Amylase is present in human saliva, where it begins the chemical process of digestion
Secretin
is a hormone that controls the secretions into the duodenum, and also separately, water homeostasis throughout the body
GIP gastric inhibitory polypeptide
function of GIP is to induce insulin secretion, which is primarily stimulated by hyperosmolarity of glucose in the duodenum
Where is the location of the three sets of salivary glands?
parotid, submandibular, and sublingual
parotid:situated below the ear
submandibular :under the mandible
sublingual :under the tongue
