What does the diencephalon consist of? |
Thalamus, Hypothalamus Subthalamus Pineal Gland -- epithalamus |
|
Parts of the Thalamus |
Subdivided into the following nuclear groups: - Anterior - Medial - Lateral - Intralaminal and reticular - Midline - Posterios |
|
What does the thalamus do? |
Connects the cerebellum and basal ganglia with cortical areas - it is thought of as a relay station - receives all sensory information except for olfactory - projects to all cortical areas, not just sensory ones - important for consciousness, arousal and attention |
|
What are the three main groups that the thalamus is divided into? |
the motor group (cerebellum and basal ganglia to the premotor and motor cortex) Sensory group (links subcortical sensory, auditory and visual with respective cortical areas) Limbic group |
|
What can lesions to the thalamus cause? |
A number of things, reflecting its heterogeneity - pain, - memory - disorders of language - consciousness disorders - sensory disturbances - hemiparesis |
