What does the diencephalon consist of?

Thalamus,

Hypothalamus

Subthalamus

Pineal Gland -- epithalamus

Parts of the Thalamus

Subdivided into the following nuclear groups:

- Anterior

- Medial

- Lateral

- Intralaminal and reticular

- Midline

- Posterios

What does the thalamus do?

Connects the cerebellum and basal ganglia with cortical areas

- it is thought of as a relay station - receives all sensory information except for olfactory

- projects to all cortical areas, not just sensory ones

- important for consciousness, arousal and attention

What are the three main groups that the thalamus is divided into?

the motor group (cerebellum and basal ganglia to the premotor and motor cortex)

Sensory group (links subcortical sensory, auditory and visual with respective cortical areas)

Limbic group

What can lesions to the thalamus cause?

A number of things, reflecting its heterogeneity

- pain,

- memory

- disorders of language

- consciousness disorders

- sensory disturbances

- hemiparesis
