Indications:
*Know hypoglycemia, based on bG test: Blood glucose less then 60mg/dl, when oral glucose should not be administered
*Suspected hypoglycemia; without bG test available:
*Coma or seizure of unknow origin
*AMS of unknow origin
*Acute or chronic ETOH ingestion with AMS
Dextrose 50% (D50W)
Contraindication:
None, in the presence of know hypoglycemia
Suspected Hypoglycemia:
*Suspected intracranial hemorrhage with unknow blood glucose
*New onset CVA s/s with unknow BGL, in a non-diabetic Pt
Dextrose 50% (D50W)
Side Effects:
Subjective warmth, phlebitis, pain or burning at site, tissue necrosis
Dextrose 50% (D50W)
Administration:
12.5-25mg D50W SIVP (1/2 preload to 1 preload) with continuous reassessment of IV patency. May repeat if needed
