Beginning of writing. Characterized by: Random drawing, organized lines, letter components, random letters Child knows: how to hold tool, letter formation, letters are central elements, left to right knowledge |

Semiphonetic Phase |
Characterized by: some systematic meaaning, sounds of letters are names of letters, consonants and long vowels, spaces between words, high frequency sight words may appear, alphabetic principle Writing might look like: IRDB (I read the book) This indicates phonological awareness. Also, onset and final consonants appear ex- I WT PZ DR (I want pizza for dinner) child can hear initial and final phonemes, but not middle |

Characterized by: Most sounds represented in writing, phonic strategies are used.
