Developmental Spelling

The spelling patterns children use in uncorrected writing.

Precommunicative Phase

Beginning of writing.


Characterized by: Random drawing, organized lines, letter components, random letters


Child knows: how to hold tool, letter formation, letters are central elements, left to right knowledge

Semiphonetic Phase

Characterized by: some systematic meaaning, sounds of letters are names of letters, consonants and long vowels, spaces between words, high frequency sight words may appear, alphabetic principle


Writing might look like: IRDB (I read the book)


This indicates phonological awareness.


Also, onset and final consonants appear


ex- I WT PZ DR (I want pizza for dinner)


child can hear initial and final phonemes, but not middle

Phonetic Phase

Characterized by: Most sounds represented in writing, phonic strategies are used.

ex- frogz jumpt

Children believe words are always spelled the way they sound

Transitional Phase

Characterized by: Some irregular, high frequency sight words spelled correctly




EX- Brn hors brn hors wut do you see I see a gra dog lkn at me.

Standard Phase

Characterized by: most words spelled correctly, misspellings follow certain patterns
