What are the most common causes of erythematous macules or papules in adults?
1. Drug reactions
2. Viral infections (aka viral exanthem) |
How is a rash caused by scabies different from rashes caused by drug reactions or viral infection?
Scabie rashes usually cause more localized papular eruptions. Drug reactions and viral infection cause a more diffuse maculopapular rash.
How can I distinguish viral from drug-related rashes?
Both cause a diffuse truncal rash, history will best delineate the likely cause. If a new medication was recently, espcially a sulfa antibiotic or penicillin, a drug reaction is likely. If viral symptoms are present, a viral exanthem is more likely.
How do you treat drug rashes?
