great depression and new deal
As the Great Depression ended the prosperity of the 1920s, the Pacific
Northwest suffered economic catastrophe like the rest of the country.
Businesses and banks failed and by 1933 only about half as many people
were working as had been in 1926. The population in the Pacific
Northwest continued to grow but more slowly, as many left the Dust Bowl
states of the Midwest and Plains.
great depression
was an economic slump in North America, Europe, and
other industrialized areas of the world that began in 1929 and lasted
until about 1939.
black tuesday
stock market crashed on Tuesday October 29, 1929 and is now referred
to as Black Tuesday. That was the begining of the great depression
which lasted from 1929 to 1939. The depression had devastating effects
on loss of jobs, homes, savings, property, death due to starvation and
lack of medical care. Black Tuesday is also used in some companies who
chose that day of the week to conduct downsizing.
dust bowl
Dirty Thirties was a period of severe dust storms
causing major ecological and agricultural damage to American and
Canadian prairie lands from 1930 to 1936 (in some areas until 1940).
gross national product
a measure of all the goods and services
produced in a country PLUS the income of its citizens. Income of
citizens not living in the country is also included.
herbert Hoover
known for being the 31st President of the United
States. He was in office from 1929-1933. He unfortunately had to deal
with the Great Depression which many believe prevented his reelection.
franklin roosevelt
managed to pull Americans out of the
Great Depression and lead them to victory in World War II. His support
of an active federal government shaped American politics through the
remainder of the 20th century. FDR was a Democrat, and his package of
federally-supported public works and social programs was known
collectively as the New Deal.
