What tissue covers the crown?
Enamel.
What tissue covers the root(s)?
Cementum.
The crown and root are joined at what junction?
Cementoenamel junction.
What is the cervical line?
The line that demarcates the cementoenamel junction, which is formed by the junction of the cementum of the root and the enamel of the crown.
Describe the anatomic crown.
The whole crown of the tooth that is covered by enamel, regardless of whether it is erupted.
Describe the clinical crown.
The clinical crown is only that part seen above the gingiva. Any nonerupted area is not a part of the clinical crown of the tooth.
Describe the clinical root.
Any unerupted part of the anatomic crown plus the anatomic root.
What does a bifurcation or trifurcation mean?
Division of the root portion into two or three segments. (Remember, each root has ONE apex or terminal end)
What is the alveolar process?
The portion of the jaw that supports the teeth.
What is the alveolus?
The bony socket in which the tooth fits.
What are the four tooth tissues?
Dentin, cementum, enamel, and dental pulp.
What determines the color of enamel?
The color of enamel varies with its thickness and mineralization. Thicker = whiter; Thinner = grayish white; More mineralized = more it lends itself to translucency
What is the chemical composition of enamel?
96% inorganic, 4% organic matter and water. Enamel is the most densely mineralized and hardest tissue in the human body.
What tissue comprises the bulk of the tooth?
Dentin. Dentin is wrapped in an envelope of enamel, which covers the crown, and an envelope of cementum, which covers the root.
What is the chemical composition of dentin? What color is it?
Dentin is 70% inorganic and 30% organic matter and water. Dentin is a hard, dense, yellow calcified tissue softer than enamel but harder than bone.
What is secondary dentin?
Unlike enamel, dentin is capable of adding to itself. When it does, new dentin is called secondary dentin.
Where is secondary dentin mainly formed?
Secondary dentin is formed throughout the pulp chamber AFTER the tooth erupts. In time, secondary dentin could completely fill the pulp chamber.
What is reparative dentin?
Dentin that is laid down in response to TRAUMA.
What is cementum?
Cementum is a bone-like substance that covers the root, although the root is not covered with a perfect layer of cementum; voids expose small patches of dentin.
What is the function of cementum?
Its main function is to provide a medium for the attachment of the tooth to the alveolar bone.
What is the chemical composition of cementum?
45-50% inorganic and 50-55% organic components. It is less dense and durable than enamel or dentin but more dense than bone.
What are the TWO types of cementum?
1. Cellular Cementum 2. Acellular Cementum
