Experimental
A study design in which one or more independent variables are systematically manipulated and all others controlled. Usually includes at least a treatment group and a control group. Participants are usually randomly assigned to either experimental or control groups.
Variable
An aspect of a person or a situation that can change.
Independent Variable
(IV or treatment or intervention variable): The variable manipulated by the experimenter in a study, or a causal variable believed to be responsible for particular effects.
(Causual Variable) |
Dependent Variable
(DV or Outcome Variable): The variable that is believed to be affected by the independent variable.
Experimental (treatment) Group
Participants in an experiment who are given a particular treatment, intervention or experimental condition.
Control Group
Participants who are intentionally not given a particular treatment, intervention, or experimental condition.
Random Sample
Getting initial participants of interest.
Random Assignment
The process of assigning participants to experimental conditions in a strictly unsystematic way such that every participant has the same chance of being placed in any study condition.
Between Subjects Design
A systematic change in an I.V. where DIFFERENT participants are exposed to different levels of that variable by the experimenter.
Ex: Mice hunger effects study; number of hrs. of food deprevation, 3 groups, different hrs. food withheld. Learning, time going through maze. *Each group are DIFFERENT groups of mice. |
Within Subject Design
A systematic change in an I.V. where the SAME participants are exposed to different levels of that variable by the experimenter.
Manipulation Check
A measure which checks that the manipulation of the I.V. has been successful.
Ex: Mice's weight measured by amount of acid in stomach. |
