French and Indian war

A war between America and British against the French and Indians.



The Americans and British won but the war had a negative affect on the relationship.



1) The British abandoned the policy of salutary neglect



2) Americans have to pay for the war cost through the Stamp act, the Sugar act, and the Tea act

Natural rights

Rights that every human being is born with and cannot be taken away.



"All men are created equal"

What can the people do if they are unhappy with the current government?

Unalienable rights

Every human being is born with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.



This idea comes from John Locke and the European Enlightenment.

Social contract

People owe loyalty only to a government that acts on the people's best interest.



Another enlightenment idea contained in the declaration.

Consent of the governed

The government gets it's power from the people and they must give their consent or permission to be governed.

Democracy

A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Republic

A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

Says that men are by nature free and equal against claims that God had made all people naturally subject to a monarch.

The decoration says that the main job of the government is to protect people's natural rights; if the government fails to do this, then the people have the right to "alter or abolish" change or get rid of that government and create a new one.
