Cheilosis (lips)

- cracking and drying of the surface of the lips and corners of the mouth
- may be caused by riboflavin deficiency - also consider herpes, syphilis, wrinkling of the skin in overweight |

- often caused by : alcohol, hot foods, spicy foods, allergic reactions to lipstick and toothpaste |

- common on lower lip
- cuased by trauma severing the excretory ducts of the accessory salivary glands allowing mucin containing saliva to move into the tissues - forms a soft nodule with a bluish tinge |

Herpes Simplex - Cold Sores (lips)

- small, painful vesicles caused by the herpes simplex virus
-prodrome may include tingling and itching - initial outbreak my have fever and pharyngitis - lesions can appear on lips, tongue, gums and cheeks - vesicles eventually rupture and leave a painful ulcer with a yellowish crust - other symptoms may inclde: submaxillary lymphadenopathy, increased salivation, haliotosis, anorexia and keratoconjunctivitis |

- may form painful vesicles on buccal mocosa, tongue, uvula, pharynx and larynx - small red nodules often unilateral |
